Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court , Lagos today, ordered the ramand of nine Ghanaians who were arrested for unlawful transportation of 10, 843. 95 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa popularly called Marijuana in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS), till July 1, when their plea will be taking.
Justice Aluko made the remand order, after seven of the Ghanaians told the court that they do not understand English language, which the charges drafted against them was written.
The Ghanaians ordered to be remanded by the court are; Victor Wuddah, 30; Freeman Gazul, 25; Adotete Joseph, 31; Moses Sottie, Male, adult, 52 years Christian Tette, 27; Stephen Sottie, 26; Kabu Okonipa, 25; Daniel Toyekpti, 35 and Kabu Natte, 36.
The Ghanaians according to the prosecutor, Mr. Jeremiah Aernan, were arrested with the banned weeds, on February 20, 2022, on the Badagry High-Sea.
Aernan told the court the defendants illegally transported the banned weeds from Ghana to Nigeria, by using two Wooden Boats.
The prosecutor told the court that the offences committed by the defendant contravened Sections 14 (b) and 11 (b) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30, LFN, 2004 and punishable under the same Act.
The defendants plea could not be taken due to their inabilty to understand English language.
Consequently, the prosecutor and the defendants’ lawyer, Uche Okoronkwo jointly asked the court for a short date, for the defendants’ plea to be taken.
Also, the prosecutor asked the court that the defendants be remanded in the custody of NCoS till when their plea will be taken.
