An investigator with the National Drug Law Enforcement (Agency) Mr. Sidi Kasimu on Friday, before a Lagos Federal High Court, gave a vivid account of how a haul of smuggled Canadian Loud (Cannabis Sativa) was seized at the Tin Can Island Port Lagos leading to the arrest of the three alleged drug traffickers.
The three alleged drug traffickers currently being prosecuted on a five counts charge by the NDLEA, in relation to the smuggled drugs, are: Falowo Samuel Kayode, Anjorin Idowu and Uzaira Ahmed.
According to the charge number FHC/L/175c/2024 the defendants and others at large were alleged to have on about the 13th day of January 2024, at Container Terminal, Tincan Port Complex, Lagos, Lagos State, without lawful authority, conspired to import 192.7 kilograms of Cannabis indica, (also called Canadian Loud), a substance similar to Cocaine, Heroin and LSD, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 14(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as amended).
When the case came up for trial before the court presided over by Justice Dipeolu on Friday, the operative, Kasimu, who is the fourth prosecution witness while been led in evidence by Barrister Andover G. Yuanyam, in his evidence said two 40 feet Containers at the Tin Can Port, Lagos have been placed under the watch list of the anti- narcotic agency based on credible intelligence.
Kasimu said that on the 18th day of January 2024 one of the two containers was positioned for 100 percent examination by the Custom Enforcement Unit of the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos in the presence of other security agency.
He added that during the examination of the container the agency discovered 17 parcels of a powdered substance and another 121 parcels of Canadian Loud (dry weed).
The witness further told the court that on the 19th of January, 2024, the second container was also positioned for 100 percent examination and that 40 parcel of a powdered substance suspected to be Cocaine and another 1,026 parcel of dry weed (cannabis Indica) was also recovered.
He added that the recovery of the substances was made in the presence of another officer of the agency, Uche Chinonso.
“On the 29th of January 2024, I and Uche went to the Police Area Command Tin Can Island, where the police handed the first defendant who was arrested in connection with the drug to us.”
The witness further stated that on 14th of February 2024, himself, Uche and the first defendant went to Badagry where the first defendant showed them more Cannabis Indica. Adding that the Exhibits Officer carried out preliminary text on the substance in the presence of the defendant, the arresting officer and it weighed 107 kg and the second seizure weighed 688.21kg.
The witness told the court further that on the 21st of February, 2024 the Exhibits Officer again presented the first recovery in the presence of 1st defendant and when weighed, the first recovery weighed 16. 9 Kilogrames of Cocaine and the second weighed 39 Kilogrames of Cocaine.
Meanwhile, further trial has been adjourned till December 10.
