A 36 year-old man, Nureni Malik, was today, arraigned before Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, for alleged assault and attack on three Officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
LASTMA’s officials allegedly assaulted and attacked by the defendant are; Shotonwa Abiodun; Fanusi Banwo and Babade Olufemi.
Police from Iporin Division, said the man and others now at large, committed the offence on November 30, 2021, at about 3.15 p.m, at Costain Roundabout, Lagos.
The police through its prosecutor, Inspector Dunni Raphael, told the court presided over by Chief Magistrate A. O. Akinde, that the defendant and others at large, despite assaulting and attacking the LASTMA’s Officials, also stole their phones with a total valued N220, 000, 00.
The prosecutor also told the court that the defendant, with sharp objects and dangerous weapons, inflicted various degree of injuries on the LASTMA Officers.
He also told the court that the defendant and others during the incidence, caused breach of public peace.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant’s actions, contravened Sections 411; 173; 287 and 168(D) of criminal law of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following his plea of not guilty, his lawyer, Mr. F. S. Oladele and A. Amaka, urged the court to admit him to bail in the most liberal terms on the ground that the offences are bailable ones.
Ruling on the bail appllication, Chief Magistrate Akinde admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sums.
Chief Magistrate Akinde also ordered that one of the sureties, must be a community leader or religious leader, while the other surety must be a family member to the defendant.
The Chief Magistrate also ordered the sureties to show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government, means of livelihood and both residential address.
The Chief Magistrate while ordering the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of the bail term, adjourned the matter till January 25, 2022, for mention.
